WERKSCHAU XII is the continuation of the annual exhibition
series of FOTOGALERIE WIEN, which presents contemporary artists who have contributed significantly to the development of artistic photography in Austria.
This year it is dedicated to the almost 40 years of artistic work of the Vorarlberg artist Gottfried Bechtold.
Gottfried Bechtold is one of the most outstanding and diverse artistic personalities of our time. He works multimedial and interdisciplinary. His main interest, however, is the extended concept of sculpture, which manifests itself intellectually in his photographic and video / film works.
WERKSCHAU XII focuses on 3 work blocks and a new installative work by the artist.
It will be Bechtold's "Picture in Picture" photographic work from several years, such as Fazilet, his "travel pictures" stills from 1971/2001 and presented in the cinema "photo films".
In the small exhibition space, Bechtold's new work, Der vekehrte Blick - an installation with cameras on tripod-like racks and with text panels, is shown.
The camera as an auratic object - the eyewitness.
The apparatus as a "trigger" of images in the twofold sense: the physically perceptible and the inner images. The time-limited gadgets are enough to evoke them for the viewer.
In Bechtold's new work, as in his earlier photographic and cinematic works, the questioning of temporal-spatial dimensions, the interplay between conceptual and documentary processes, different levels of reality and the examination of haptic-sensory perceptions play an essential role.
